Emotional Intelligence and Leading Lightly: The Power of Connection

“The meeting of two personalities is like the contact of two chemical substances;

if there is any reaction, both are transformed.” — Carl Jung

In every interaction, something profound happens. Whether in the workplace or in personal relationships, the way we connect with others shapes not just outcomes but transforms us at our core.

Last week I introduced the idea of working softly, a new way to approach working that increases a sense of ease, connection and psychological flexibility.

Leading lightly is an extension of this idea.

Leading lightly isn’t just a leadership style—it’s a way of being that uses emotional intelligence to create lasting, positive change.

People interact with each other, and no leadership style you learn at university truly prepares you for the complexity of human emotions and relationships. This is where working lightly comes in. It’s about understanding the subtle dynamics at play in every interaction and leading with empathy, compassion, and insight.

As a Psychologist, I have intentionally combined five powerful ingredients to create a system that redefines leadership and personal development:

  1. An interaction model between two people
  2. Current gold standard leadership models
  3. Results from neuroscience
  4. Emotional intelligence
  5. Road-tested insights from thousands of people I have worked with

This unique blend forms a system of relating to yourself, others, and the world that embraces the power of working and leading softly. By integrating emotional intelligence with a light approach to leadership, we can foster environments where everyone feels valued, understood, and motivated to contribute their best.

I talk about this model in my book Transformational Nurse identities, how to revolutionise your leadership.

Want an easy way to start to work with me?

  1. Here is a link to two chapters to join a more contemporary conversation about emotional intelligence that allows to feel better about your leadership whilst you help others work at their best.
  2. Join our masterclass to have a little check where your leadership team stands. Think of it like a team check up. Register, get the zoom link and then roll up your sleeves with a pen and paper to finally put words to where you they are at.
Think of it like a blood test when you get your yearly checkup at the doctors. You want to get a read out of the invisible aspects of your body. It’s the same with your team. You can have a bit of an idea of what is happening, but now you can have words and then a plan for what needs to happen next.

Warmly,

Michelle
